Fly Fishing & Instruction

“It has always been my private conviction that any man who pits his intelligence against a fish and loses, has it coming.“
                                                                 John Steinbeck

Texas fly fishing at its finest!  Each autumn, usually around mid-October or as soon as the water temperature is below 70 degrees, Joshua Creek is stocked with 10-inch plus rainbow trout and from then until May, provides an exciting challenge to fly fishermen.  There is always time to relax between bird hunts with some hill country fly fishing in the crystal clear waters of spring-fed Joshua Creek!  Some guests opt to spend their whole day casting a line to the fish, hoping to discover the one fly that will be absolutely irresistible.  (View video)

We have fly fishing gear available for rent, and you can purchase flies in our Pro Shop that are particularly suited to these waters.  Of course, we welcome you to bring your own fly fishing gear, as well.

If you're not a skilled fly fisherman, or you're just beginning to develop your skill, fly casting instructions can be arranged for you.  Guides are also available if you desire assistance, or if you want a guided fly fishing experience.

Other Fishing Opportunities

About a mile from the Main Lodge, Joshua Creek flows into the Guadalupe River, which runs along the north boundary of the Ranch.  In addition to the year-round crappie, sun fish, and bluegill, the variety of fish increases to include blue and channel catfish, the small and large mouth bass, and the legendary Guadalupe Bass, found only in this part of  Texas, and always a thrill for fishermen with any kind of tackle.  It's always cool and pleasant under the canopy of giant river cypress and pecan trees along the Guadalupe, even on the hottest Texas day!

INTRODUCING  “LODGE AT RIVER'S EDGE“ IN BASALT, COLORADO (aka  “JOSHUA CREEK NORTH“)

We now have “Joshua Creek North!”  The Lodge is located on the Frying Pan River, in Basalt, Colorado.  It is a short, 20-minute drive to Aspen and a few minutes less to the Aspen airport from the Lodge.

Average temperatures range from a cool, crisp 50 degrees in the morning, warming up to 85 by late afternoon at the peak of summer.  Frequently, summer showers crop up to cool the afternoon temperature down into the 70’s. Opportunities for summer entertainment abound in the area.  There are four rivers within a 45-minute drive from the Lodge, the closest, of course, being the Frying Pan; the Roaring Fork is five minutes away; the Taylor and Colorado Rivers are also within 40 minutes drive time.  The Frying Pan River is a “blue ribbon” river with native rainbow trout and brown trout in abundance.

Besides fishing, other activities in the area include white water rafting on numerous rivers, with the Colorado and Roaring Fork Rivers being the most significant in the area.  There are lots of summer activities in Aspen, including music and theater festivals throughout the summer, hiking, biking, and, of course, big game hunting in the fall.  The Lodge is also located approximately 15 minutes from Snow Mass, one of the top skiing areas in the country.

The Lodge has 4 individual rooms and a separate log cabin that accommodates a family of 4.  We suggest you contact the Lodge directly at 907-927-4991 for specific rates and availability.  United Airlines has a direct flight to Denver from San Antonio with easy connections to Aspen.  When you feel like you're “well done” from the Texas summer heat, why don't you take a break and visit us at the Lodge at River's Edge in cool Colorado! Click on the link below and check it out for yourself!
